A fire broke out at an animation training center in Lucknow, India, resulting in 15 confirmed deaths, mostly students, and injuring 6 others.
On Monday, 22 Jun 2026 GMT+7, a fire occurred at an animation training center in Lucknow, northern India, killing at least 15 people, mostly students, and injuring six others, two of whom are in critical condition.
Local media reported the fire took place in the Aliganj area of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state.
The building’s ground floor housed a pet shop and veterinary clinic, while the upper floor was an animation studio and learning center. Police said about 21 students were inside the building when the fire broke out.
Videos shared on social media show people climbing out of windows to escape. One clip shows a man falling from the upper floor while trying to flee; local media reported he survived and was taken to hospital.
Thick smoke hindered rescue efforts, forcing officials to break through the rear wall to enter the building. Fans were used to clear smoke as emergency teams searched rooms and bathrooms for survivors.
Mohammad Asin, an employee of the animation studio, said workers had just returned from lunch when they were alerted to the fire.
“At first, we thought it was a small fire, but as we tried to leave, smoke filled the rooms and corridors,” he said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
