Donald Trump emphasized that stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is more important than concerns about a global economic downturn resulting from prolonged military operations.
On Monday, 22 June 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that preventing Iran from possessing nuclear weapons is a higher priority than worries over the economic impact that could arise from extended military actions, including the risk of a major global economic recession.
When asked by reporters if he was willing to risk a global economic downturn by attacking Iran if the country failed to comply with agreements, Trump replied, “Well, not in the way I’m handling it. It definitely will not cause an economic recession.”
Trump added that the threat from nuclear weapons is a far greater concern, stating, “If they don’t comply—well, nuclear weapons are more important than an economic downturn.”
“An economic recession is certainly very bad… but nuclear weapons can cause an economic collapse much faster,” he said.
Furthermore, Trump reiterated that military options remain if Iran does not adhere to agreements. “If Iran doesn’t follow their commitments or continues misbehaving, I will do what I have to do.”
