Gunman Kills Two in Montreal Before Police Shootout

A gunman shot and killed a police officer and a civilian in Montreal, Canada, before being fatally shot by police while authorities investigate the suspect's motive.

Foreign news agencies reported on Monday, 22 Jun 2026 GMT+7, that a shooting in Montreal, Canada, resulted in at least two deaths, including a police officer, and one injury. The suspect was fatally shot by police at the scene.

The shooting took place in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood of Montreal. Fadi Dager, Montreal Police Chief (SPVM), said in a press conference that officers were called to the Hilton Garden hotel where the suspect shot at police.

Dager stated that one male police officer and one civilian died at the scene. Another female police officer was seriously injured and hospitalized but is now in stable condition.

The police chief added that it has been 24 years since a Montreal police officer (SPVM) was last killed in the line of duty. "It is a tragedy. It is a nightmare."

In a safety alert issued around 12:30 p.m. local time, Canadian authorities advised residents in Côte-des-Neiges to shelter indoors due to an "armed and dangerous suspect" in the area.

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada expressed condolences to the families of the victims, stating, "I extend my deepest sympathies to the families, loved ones, and colleagues of the police officers who died in the line of duty in Côte-des-Neiges."

"My thoughts are also with everyone affected by this tragedy. We are closely monitoring the situation and urge the public to follow the Montreal police's instructions."

Quebec Governor Christine Fréchette posted on platform X that she is "deeply saddened" by the shooting. She said the local government is fully cooperating with relevant agencies and emphasized, "Acts like this have no place in our society. We are closely following the situation."

Details about the suspect and the motive behind the shooting have not yet been disclosed.
