Iran National Football Team Leaves Thank You Letter to Los Angeles After Undefeated Two Matches

The Iran national football team left a handwritten message in the locker room at SoFi Stadium, thanking the people of Los Angeles and the fans for their warm welcome during the World Cup amid travel restrictions and a politically charged atmosphere. They affirmed that the team came with pride, competed with honor, and departed with dignity.

The Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran and Ramin Rezaeian, the team's forward, shared images of the handwritten letter left in the locker room at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, after Iran drew 0-0 with Belgium in the World Cup Group G stage, keeping Iran's hopes alive to advance to the knockout rounds.

"From ancient Persia thousands of years ago to Iran's present-day development, the spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast. Thank you, Los Angeles, for your kindness and hospitality... We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor, and leave with dignity. Additionally, thanks to all Iranians who gave their hearts, cheers, and spirit for our country throughout the 180 minutes. May peace, respect, and friendship prevail above all nations."

For this competition, the Iran national team faced significant hardships due to U.S. government restrictions that did not allow them to stay long-term in the country. As a result, the team had to base their training camp in Tijuana, Mexico, and cross the border into the U.S. back and forth for each match. Moreover, some Iranian staff and coaches were denied U.S. visas.

Amir Ghalenoei, head coach of Iran, repeatedly criticized these restrictions, stating his team faced challenges and difficulties unlike any other team in the tournament. However, U.S. authorities have stated they are reviewing the measures and negotiating to ease some restrictions in the future.

Although the Iranian players received warm hospitality and care from their hotel in Manhattan Beach and their training ground in Carson, the match atmosphere was filled with political tension. Before both matches began, some fans loudly booed the Iranian national anthem inside the stadium.

Additionally, outside SoFi Stadium, hundreds of exiled Iranians and supporters gathered, holding signs and flags opposing the current Iranian government, condemning the crackdown on pro-democracy activists in the country. Nevertheless, most fans inside the stadium continued to cheer and support the players enthusiastically.

Despite the external pressures, the Iran national team made history by remaining unbeaten in their first two World Cup matches for the first time ever (drawing 2-2 with New Zealand and 0-0 with Belgium). Before leaving Los Angeles, all players confirmed that political conflicts did not diminish their determination or their honorable style of play.

For their next match, the final group stage game, Iran will travel to Seattle to face Egypt at Lumen Field on the night of 27 Jun 2024 GMT+7, aiming for a historic ticket to advance to the next round.
