U.S. Congress Passes Resolution to Limit Donald Trumps War Powers

The U.S. Congress has approved a measure limiting President Donald Trump's war powers after the Senate passed the resolution with support from some Republican senators as well.

On 23 Jun 2026 GMT+7, the Republican-majority U.S. Senate approved a measure ordering President Donald Trump to end the war in Iran or obtain congressional approval before continuing military operations.

Several Republican senators voted alongside Democrats in a 50 to 48 vote last Tuesday, demonstrating bipartisan cooperation to oppose the war with Iran that began in February.

The same measure was already approved by the U.S. House of Representatives earlier in June, with multiple Republicans joining Democrats in support.

However, the measure is mostly symbolic, as it will not be forwarded to President Trump for consideration and carries no legal force despite congressional approval from both chambers.

Nonetheless, the resolution could be used in future legal battles.

This vote marks the first time since the War Powers Resolution was enacted in 1973 that both chambers of Congress have jointly approved a resolution directing the president to end military action.

Passing this resolution is significant because it increases pressure on the White House to find a way to end the Iran conflict amid rising oil prices and growing public anti-war sentiment.

Under federal law, the U.S. must get congressional approval to continue military operations beyond 60 days. The joint attacks by the U.S. and Israel began on 28 February, but Trump's team argues that the ceasefire in April reset the clock.

Additionally, the White House can extend this limit by another 30 days citing national security reasons.

Currently, the U.S. and Iran have agreed to extend the ceasefire and are cooperating under a Memorandum of Understanding signed by both presidents last week to end hostilities.

Under this MOU, Washington and Tehran have 60 days to reach a broader agreement to end Iran's nuclear program.
