Train Service Across Germany Temporarily Halted Due to Communication System Failure, Stranding Passengers Nationwide

Germany's nationwide train network temporarily suspended services after an internal communication system failure, leaving many passengers stranded at stations before services gradually resumed late at night.

On 24 June 2026, train services across Germany were temporarily halted due to a problem with the digital communication system used to control train operations. This caused many passengers to become stranded at stations, resulting in long queues as they sought travel information.

Deutsche Bahn, Germany's national train operator, reported that the problem involved the GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications–Railway) system, which connects train drivers, control centers, and personnel across the national rail network. After nearly two and a half hours of disruption, the company announced around 01:00 that the issue was resolved and services were gradually restored.

The company later stated it had identified the cause but had not yet disclosed details. Meanwhile, the Bild newspaper quoted Evelyn Palla, CEO of Deutsche Bahn, saying that the situation was managed using an emergency backup system. During the outage, Deutsche Bahn provided taxi and accommodation vouchers to affected passengers and opened some stationary trains at stations for people to rest in. She also apologized for the incident.

In recent years, Germany has experienced increasing train delays and service disruptions, prompting Deutsche Bahn to launch a major rail upgrade project to improve efficiency after years of underinvestment in infrastructure. While Germany's rail network has previously experienced wide-scale service stoppages mostly due to storms or severe weather, this recent disruption was caused by a technical failure in the communication system, an occurrence considered relatively rare.
