King Charles III Will Not Move into Buckingham Palace After £369 Million Renovation Completes Next Year

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will not move into Buckingham Palace even though the £369 million (approximately 16,200 million baht) renovation project will be completed next year. They will continue to reside at Clarence House, while also allowing greater public access to the palace.

On 26 June 2026 GMT+7, the British Royal Household announced that King Charles III will not move into Buckingham Palace after the extensive 10-year renovation project, costing £369 million (around 16,200 million baht), is completed in 2027.

Royal Household officials confirmed that Buckingham Palace will remain the central location for royal ceremonies and official royal duties. However, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will continue to reside at Clarence House, the residence they have occupied since his time as Prince of Wales.

James Chalmers, a senior financial officer at the Royal Household, said this decision will enable Buckingham Palace to welcome more visitors through expanded events, extended opening hours, and increased tourist numbers, which currently total about 700,000 annually.

Buckingham Palace was built in the 1830s and has served as the official residence of British monarchs since Queen Victoria's reign. It contains 775 rooms and hosts royal ceremonies and receptions for world leaders. The renovation, started in 2017, addresses outdated plumbing, electrical, and heating systems, and reinforces the building's structure to ensure it remains functional for at least another 50 years.
