Venezuelan rescuers retrieved the bodies of a 3-year-old and a 10-year-old child from the rubble of a building collapsed by the earthquake. Their mother screamed in grief before fainting, surrounded by the heartbreak of relatives and officials.
The city of La Guaira, Venezuela, was filled with sorrow after rescue teams found the bodies of Leyder Rojas, aged 3, and Leymar Rojas, aged 10, beneath the rubble of a building destroyed by the powerful earthquake. The children’s bodies were wrapped in blankets and removed from the debris, while their mother screamed in anguish before collapsing in faint, amidst the grief of family and rescue workers.
Ramon Eduardo, the uncle of the two children, described the tragic moment, saying the family tried their best to help everyone trapped under the debris but managed to rescue only one person.
Although there was no miracle for this family and many others, there was some good news from rescuers who found survivors in some areas. Rescue teams and soldiers successfully saved Adrian, a 4-year-old boy, from under the rubble and quickly transported him by ambulance, much to the relief of his family monitoring the search.
Additionally, a woman named Graciela Mora was rescued from beneath the debris after she tried to reach out for help. Volunteers cheered and applauded as she was carried on a stretcher to the hospital.
Mora recounted that when the earthquake began shaking, she grabbed onto a doorframe tightly until her fingers broke but refused to let go, even as the building collapsed floor by floor. Through tears, she said she saw a friend’s hand and held it, but her friend did not survive, and she never even had a chance to cry.
This tragic event followed two strong earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude that struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, marking some of the most severe quakes in the country in over a century. The tremors were felt across several countries in the region, prompting evacuations as far as the Amazon basin in Brazil.
Drone footage revealed widespread damage throughout La Guaira, north of Caracas, with many residential buildings collapsed. This area was among the hardest hit. The country’s main international airport was also damaged and had to close, complicating efforts to deploy personnel and deliver aid.
Official updates report at least 235 deaths, over 1,500 injuries, thousands missing, and more than 200 people still trapped under rubble. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as rescue operations have yet to reach all affected areas.
