
Japan experienced a 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Yamanashi Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo. There was no tsunami warning, but some Shinkansen train services were suspended. Meanwhile, nuclear power plants reported no abnormalities.
On 26 June 2026, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported a 5.6 magnitude earthquake on Friday evening, centered in Yamanashi Prefecture west of Tokyo. However, authorities confirmed there was no risk of a tsunami.
Due to the tremors, the Tokai Shinkansen high-speed rail operator announced a temporary suspension of services between Tokyo and Shizuoka stations to inspect track safety. Additionally, several expressways were temporarily closed due to the impact.
The operator of the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Shizuoka Prefecture stated that no abnormalities were detected from the earthquake, and radiation levels around the plant remain within normal limits.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned the public to stay alert for possible aftershocks in the coming period and to closely monitor official announcements.
