Japan Reports Earthquake Damage, 6 Injured Experts Warn of Aftershocks for One Week

Japan assessed the damage after a magnitude 5.6 earthquake northwest of Tokyo. At least six people were injured. Landslides, collapsed building walls, and disruptions to electricity and water supply were reported. Experts warned of potentially strong aftershocks.

On 28 June 2026 GMT+7, the Japanese government revealed that at least six people were injured from a magnitude 5.6 earthquake that struck Yamanashi Prefecture, west of Tokyo, at 22:28 on Friday. The maximum shaking intensity reached level 6 on Japan's seven-level seismic scale. No tsunami warning was issued.

Officials reported damage across multiple areas, including collapsed building walls, power and water outages, and landslides in Kanagawa Prefecture. These incidents are under investigation with aid efforts underway.

The Tokaido Shinkansen high-speed rail operator suspended some train services. Meanwhile, the operator of the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Shizuoka Prefecture confirmed no abnormalities in the plant or radiation levels.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that the government formed a special task force to monitor the situation. She ordered all agencies to quickly assess damage and coordinate with local authorities to assist affected residents, emphasizing the protection of human life as the top priority.

Ebita Ayataka, an official from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), said areas experiencing strong shaking remain at risk of further landslides and building collapses. He warned the public to be alert for aftershocks possibly reaching nearly level 6 intensity, continuing for about a week, especially in the first two to three days. He advised avoiding steep slopes and damaged buildings until they are confirmed safe.
