Israel continued drone attacks in southern Lebanon just one day after agreeing with Lebanon to withdraw troops from the area, citing the need to eliminate threats.
On Saturday, 27 Jun 2026 GMT+7, the Israeli military launched drone strikes again in southern Lebanon, only one day after agreeing to partially withdraw forces from the region, highlighting the fragility of the ceasefire agreement between the two countries.
The previous Friday, Israel and Lebanon reached a joint agreement during talks in Washington, D.C., under which Israel agreed to withdraw troops from the northern and southern areas of the Litani River and hand over control of those areas to the Lebanese army.
Officials from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told CNN that this attack aimed to eliminate threats to their personnel.
The strikes underscore ongoing challenges to achieving a peace agreement in Lebanon and complicate peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, as Iran demands a ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon, where Israel and Hezbollah have been fighting for months.
However, Hezbollah rejected the latest agreement between Israel and Lebanon, with the group's Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem stating in a statement that the agreement represents a “loss of Lebanon’s sovereignty.”
