One Dead, 13 Injured as Small Plane Crashes into Skyscraper in China Authorities Investigate

A small plane crashed into a skyscraper in China, killing the pilot and injuring 13 others. Chinese authorities have not released further details.

Foreign news agencies reported on 27 June 2026 that a small aircraft crashed into CITIC Tower, the tallest building in Beijing, on Friday (26 June). The plane had only one occupant, the pilot, who has since died. Additionally, 13 people were injured in the incident.

According to Reuters, citing information from the Chaoyang district government, the incident occurred in Beijing’s central business district (CBD), resulting in the pilot’s death and injuries to 13 people on the ground who were struck by falling debris.

“A two-seat, single-engine light aircraft crashed into a skyscraper near the East Third Ring Road in Chaoyang District at 17:55 (09:55 GMT) on 26 June,” stated the Chaoyang district government. “There was only one person on board, the pilot, who has died.”

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash. However, no further details have been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether the incident was intentional or accidental.

Reuters also reported that on Saturday, 27 June, the damaged area caused by the crash was temporarily covered with wooden panels.

Reports from The Times, Reuters, and CNN consistently stated that after the crash, a large number of police officers and firefighters arrived at the scene around the building.

NBC News reported that while police were keeping bystanders away from the crash site, officials also prohibited witnesses from taking photos and requested that others delete any images already captured.

A postal worker who spoke to Reuters admitted he had recorded video of the plane stuck against the building but later deleted it out of fear of police arrest. Additionally, a police officer reportedly ordered a Reuters journalist to leave the area.
