Sheikh Hasina, Former Bangladesh Prime Minister, Vows to Return to Dhaka Within This Year

Sheikh Hasina, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, in her latest media interview confirmed that she will definitely return to the country within this year, even though she may face the death penalty.

Foreign news agencies reported that Sheikh Hasina, the former Bangladeshi prime minister currently evading charges, declared firmly that she will return to the country this year. The interview, published on Sunday (28 Jun 2024 GMT+7), came just months after she was sentenced in absentia to death for crimes against humanity by a court in Dhaka.

The 78-year-old Hasina fled to neighboring India in August 2024 following a student-led uprising that ended her more than 15 years of iron-fisted rule.

Since then, she has not appeared publicly except once, when her speech was broadcast live to a large gathering at the Press Club in New Delhi in January.

In her recent interview with India's NDTV, Hasina said she is unafraid of death and described the death sentence as “part of an illegal process, unconstitutional, and politically motivated.”

“Many conspiracies were devised to destroy me, but overcoming these plots led me to be elected prime minister five times by popular vote and to work on unprecedented national development,” Hasina said.

“I want to make it clear that having overcome all obstacles and conspiracies, I will definitely return to my country within this year,” she added when asked if she would return despite facing the death penalty.

Last November, a Dhaka court found Hasina guilty of incitement, ordering killings, and failing to prevent brutal acts, sentencing her to death by hanging.

Meanwhile, activities of the Awami League, her former ruling party once among the country's most popular, have been declared illegal.
