Miraculous Survival: Venezuelan Rescuers Save 21-Year-Old Man Trapped Under Earthquake Debris for 106 Hours

Venezuelan and international rescue teams successfully freed a 21-year-old man from the rubble of a building collapsed by an earthquake after he had been trapped for 106 hours.

On Monday, 29 Jun 2026 GMT+7, Nayib Bukele, President of El Salvador, announced that rescue teams from Venezuela, Mexico, and El Salvador had successfully rescued a 21-year-old man trapped under debris in Venezuela's La Guaira state for nearly five days.

President Bukele posted that Aaron Levi Cantillo Vargas was found alive beneath the rubble in Caraballeda city; however, the rescuers faced difficulty as deceased bodies blocked the path between them and Aaron.

Bukele added that the 21-year-old is now under specialist medical care, and the rescue teams will "continue working with hope to save as many lives as possible."

Meanwhile, Delcy Rodriguez, Acting President of Venezuela, stated that the rescue operation took 43 hours, and Aaron had been trapped under the rubble for 106 hours before being rescued.

Venezuelan authorities reported that the two consecutive earthquakes last week caused at least 1,450 deaths and 3,150 injuries. Additionally, at least 774 homes were destroyed or damaged, and 12,721 people became displaced.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimated the "direct physical damage" from the earthquakes in Venezuela at up to $6.7 billion USD, approximately 6% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP).
