The United Nations condemns the expansion of Jewish settlements and violence in the West Bank, urging Israel to immediately halt settlement activities. It also expresses concern over attacks on civilians by both Israeli settlers and Palestinians, respectively.
On 30 June 2026, Ramiz Alakbarov, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator and deputy special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, addressed the UN Security Council meeting via video. He reiterated the UN Secretary-General’s strong condemnation of the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, stating that settlements and related infrastructure must cease immediately.
Alakbarov said the situation of violence and tension in the West Bank is extremely concerning. He condemned all forms of violence against civilians, including terrorism, and expressed worry over the continuing and escalating attacks by Israeli settlers.
At the same time, he also expressed concern over attacks by Palestinians against Israelis, emphasizing that all perpetrators must be brought to justice. Additionally, the UN representative voiced concern about attempts to change the status quo of the holy sites in Jerusalem, stressing the need to respect the existing agreements and the special role of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in overseeing these sacred areas..
