Flash floods occurred in the capital of Ghana following heavy rainfall, resulting in 13 deaths. Authorities continue to urge residents to move to higher ground as another storm approaches.
Foreign news agencies reported on 30 Jun 2026 that flash floods struck Accra, Ghana's capital, after heavy rain fell overnight Sunday, causing at least 13 fatalities. The Meteorological Department forecasted increased rainfall from a major storm moving in from the east.
This situation led the Ghanaian government to warn citizens to stay indoors or evacuate to higher ground, even though water levels have mostly begun to recede. Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) cautioned that the death toll might rise as rescue operations remain ongoing.
The floods mainly affected low-lying areas. Online videos showed homes and vehicles submerged, with many buildings damaged.
Emergency response teams from the police, fire service, military, and National Disaster Management Organization were deployed to monitor the situation and protect lives and property. Officials have rescued over 470 people so far.
The flooding also caused a major fire at a rubber factory in Accra.
Preliminary data shows Accra received up to 140 mm of rain on Sunday night. Compared to the previous year’s maximum single-day rainfall of about 56 mm, experts note this sharp increase signals impacts from climate change.
Ghana’s Meteorological Agency warned that heavy rains will continue in the southern region, including Accra, from Tuesday morning through afternoon, increasing the risk of repeated flooding. They advised people to avoid sheltering under trees, watch out for fallen power lines, and not to walk or drive through floodwaters.
Flooding in Accra is worsened by poor drainage systems, blocked pipes, and illegal constructions obstructing waterways. President John Mahama condemned these irresponsible acts, stating, “The careless actions of a few have placed entire communities at risk.”
After conducting an aerial survey of the capital on Monday, President Mahama ordered the immediate demolition of all illegal structures blocking drainage channels.
