Hong Kong held a ceremony on 1 July to celebrate the 29th anniversary of its return to Chinese sovereignty, with senior officials, business leaders, and prominent Hong Kong figures attending in unison.
On 1 July, marking the anniversary of Hong Kong's handover from the United Kingdom back to China in 1997 under the "One Country, Two Systems" principle, Hong Kong organized a ceremony to commemorate the 29th year since its return to Chinese sovereignty.
The ceremony began with the raising of the flags of the People's Republic of China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai, attended by senior officials, business leaders, and key figures of Hong Kong.
After the ceremony, John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, was scheduled to deliver a speech at a reception held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre to present his vision and direction for economic development and improving citizens' quality of life under the "One Country, Two Systems" framework.
Furthermore, the Hong Kong government organized celebrations throughout the city all day, including helicopter flights displaying the national and Hong Kong flags, a maritime parade by security agencies, and activities across all 18 districts to commemorate the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
In addition, public and private sectors jointly offered benefits to residents and tourists, with over 1,000 shops, restaurants, and businesses running special promotions. Residents could use tram services for free, visit certain museums and state tourist attractions at no cost, and enjoy discounts on public transport and various tourist sites to encourage spending and tourism during this special holiday in Hong Kong.
