A masked couple climbed the spire of the Empire State Building, held a banner supporting love and peace, and then the man proposed to the woman before both were taken into custody by New York police.
Foreign news agencies reported on Wednesday, 1 Jul 2026 GMT+7, that a couple wearing black masks climbed the antenna spire of the Empire State Building in New York City, unfurling a large banner reading, "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will find peace."
After descending to a small platform serving as a viewing point on the spire, the man knelt in what appeared to be a marriage proposal, offering a ring to the woman. They then kissed before climbing back down.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) told BBC News that both individuals were detained after spending at least 10 minutes atop the 1,454-foot (443-meter) spire.
An Empire State Building spokesperson said the "unauthorized incident" caused no harm to tenants, residents, or visitors at the observation areas located slightly below the spire.
"We want to emphasize that the Empire State Building’s observation deck, atop the world-famous landmark in the heart of New York City, already offers real and available ways for the most memorable marriage proposals," the spokesperson said in a statement.
