Perpetrators threw firebombs at the homes of three Greek government party members, causing one death and multiple injuries, including a parliamentary candidate from the ruling party.
On Wednesday, 1 Jul 2026, Greek authorities revealed that attackers threw firebombs at the residences of New Democracy party members—the conservative ruling party—at three locations before dawn, resulting in one death and several injuries.
Police reported the attacks occurred between 04:00 and 04:45 at several apartment buildings in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, where assailants used homemade explosives made from camping gas cylinders.
However, all injuries resulted from the final of the three attacks, which caused cars and motorcycles to catch fire.
Reports indicate one of the vehicles belonged to Afroditi Nestora, a New Democracy parliamentary candidate, who suffered burn injuries, while her mother succumbed to burn wounds later in the ICU.
Additionally, police stated that two other apartment residents were hospitalized for treatment.
On Wednesday afternoon, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, also leader of New Democracy, traveled to Thessaloniki to visit the injured in hospital, calling the casualties a result of “blind violence.”
“Bloodshed and sowing division by extremist groups will no longer be tolerated,” Mitsotakis said in a written statement. “The legitimacy of the state and social unity must push this terrorism to the margins of society.”
He added that Greece has struggled to rebuild its economy and overcome painful internal divisions, stating, “The country will never return to those times.”
Attacks by mysterious armed groups targeting symbols of power, politicians' property, police, and other officials are relatively frequent in Greece. Most cause property damage but no injuries.
In July 2025, a bomb exploded outside the home of the head of the Greek prison guards association in Thessaloniki. He was unharmed, but two civilians suffered minor injuries from flying glass.
In June 2024, a police officer guarding the residence of a chief judge in Athens was injured in a bottle bomb attack.
