Cambodia Cancels Annual Water Festival in Phnom Penh for Second Consecutive Year

The Cambodian government has canceled the Water Festival in Phnom Penh for the second consecutive year, citing the need to prioritize national issues including border problems, public assistance, and support for displaced persons.

On 2 July 2026, the Cambodian government announced the cancellation of the "Bon Om Touk" Water Festival in Phnom Penh, originally scheduled for 23-25 November 2026. This marks the second consecutive year the capital’s annual celebration has been canceled.

This order follows a circular signed by Prime Minister Hun Manet on 1 July, stating the government must focus on urgent national tasks including border situations, public needs, and aid for those affected by displacement. However, the government allows each province to hold traditional Water Festival activities locally as appropriate. Meanwhile, it confirmed the three-day public holiday for the Water Festival will remain in effect as originally scheduled for civil servants and private sector employees.
