A bomb exploded at a café in Syria's capital, killing 9 people and injuring 20, caused by an explosive device hidden by attackers.
On Thursday, 2 Jul 2026 GMT+7, Syrian authorities reported that a bomb detonated at a café in Damascus, killing 9 and injuring 20. This poses a new challenge to Syria's Islamist leadership efforts to stabilize the country after over a decade of prolonged conflict.
This bombing was caused by an explosive device concealed on site. It is the deadliest incident since last year's suicide attack at a Christian church. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident occurred near the Palace of Justice in the capital, an important government building, causing widespread panic and chaos in the area.
AFP reporters observed ambulances with sirens blaring weaving through traffic toward the scene, while security forces sealed off the surrounding area where the explosion took place.
Damascus Governor Maher al-Dib announced the formation of an investigative committee. He said, “Those responsible for this bloodshed must be punished. Whenever the country begins to enter a period of stability, hostile groups always attempt to undermine it.”
Claudio Cordone, the UN Special Envoy to Syria, posted on X that the perpetrators “should be brought to justice.”
Turkey, which maintains close ties with Syria’s Islamist leadership, condemned the attack and pledged to “maintain united cooperation with Syria throughout this period.”
Additionally, several Arab countries including Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, and Egypt also condemned the violent incident.
