Keiko Fujimori Wins Peru Presidential Election, Set to Lead with Crime-Fighting Policies

Peru's Election Commission has certified Keiko Fujimori's victory in the presidential runoff after narrowly defeating her rival by just 0.27%. She is set to take office later this month, emphasizing policies to crack down on crime gangs and tighten border security.

On 4 July 2026, Keiko Fujimori, a 51-year-old conservative politician, was officially declared the winner of Peru's presidential runoff after the National Election Board certified the results. Official tallies showed Fujimori receiving 50.1% of the vote, narrowly surpassing nationalist Congressman Roberto Sánchez, who garnered 49.8%. Both candidates advanced to the runoff on 7 June after defeating 33 other contenders in the first round held in April.

Reports indicate that Fujimori will assume the presidency in late July, becoming Peru's ninth president within ten years, reflecting the country's ongoing political volatility.

A key issue in this election was the rising crime rate, especially extortion and violence linked to criminal networks. Fujimori campaigned on a strict law enforcement platform, pledging to apply a "firm hand" policy to restore national security.

Fujimori is the daughter of the late Alberto Fujimori, a former president who served during the 1990s. His administration successfully suppressed leftist insurgents but faced severe criticism for authoritarian practices. He was convicted in 2009 for human rights violations and later sentenced in multiple corruption cases.
