Chinese authorities have appointed two more generals following an anti-corruption crackdown over recent months that resulted in the dismissal of several senior officers.
Foreign news agencies reported on 4 Jul 2026 that the Chinese military promoted two officers to generals, possibly signaling an impending restructure of senior leadership after several military leaders were removed amid a long-running anti-corruption campaign.
It is believed this reshuffle partly aims to ensure the military remains loyal to the ruling Communist Party and to leader Xi Jinping.
Xi Jinping, who also chairs the Central Military Commission, issued orders appointing Zhang Xuguang and Air Force Commander Wang Gang as generals during a ceremony last Friday. Zhang was also named head of the CMC’s anti-corruption inspection agency, the military's highest-level oversight body.
These promotions may qualify them for consideration to join the Central Military Commission, which originally had seven members but now only two remain active due to ongoing corruption investigations.
The commission, chaired by Xi Jinping, currently has only one other active member, Vice Chairman Zhang Shengmin, while two former vice chairmen and other top military officers have been dismissed or relieved of duties.
A new list of commission members is expected to be announced in the fall of next year, coinciding with the current commission's five-year term expiration.
