Fire Breaks Out on Brooklyn Bridge During U.S. Independence Day Fireworks Celebration

A fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City during the fireworks display celebrating the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence Day. Authorities initially controlled the fire quickly, while investigations into the cause and assessment of damage to this iconic New York landmark are ongoing.

A fire occurred on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, United States, during the fireworks show commemorating U.S. Independence Day on July 4th, which this year marks the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding. The incident caused alarm among many spectators gathered along the East River to watch the display.

Live broadcast footage showed flames and smoke billowing from the bridge’s structure as fireworks continued to be launched from the bridge. Sparks and smoke spread across several areas. Emergency personnel wearing reflective vests rushed to control the situation, with emergency vehicles and fire trucks arriving promptly at the scene.

Reports indicate that the fire originated on the side of the bridge facing the East River, where water was sprayed toward the flames to extinguish them. Meanwhile, authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire and assessing any structural damage to the bridge.

Several eyewitnesses said they initially thought the flames were part of the fireworks display but grew concerned as the fire spread and thick black smoke appeared.

A 24-year-old French woman watching from the Brooklyn waterfront said she first believed it was a special effect but later feared an explosion. She mistakenly thought the bridge was made of wood and worried the fire would spread. She reported seeing flames ignite simultaneously at four points and noted some fireworks exploded further due to the fire. Meanwhile, a 31-year-old Egyptian tourist described the fire starting small before rapidly growing, with dense black smoke rising above the bridge.

However, local reporters stated that the fire was fully extinguished within about one minute, and there were no reports of injuries or serious damage from the incident.

The fire occurred amid nationwide celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence. In Washington, D.C., unstable weather and thunderstorms forced the evacuation of attendees from the National Mall for over two hours before President Donald Trump confirmed he would deliver his scheduled speech despite the unfavorable weather.

New York City officials have not yet officially disclosed the cause of the fire on the Brooklyn Bridge but are expected to thoroughly inspect the fireworks setup and the structure at the fire’s origin to prevent similar incidents in the future.
