Gunman Opens Fire at U.S. Independence Day Party, Injuring Eight Including Four Children

A gunman opened fire in a backyard where people were hosting a barbecue party celebrating the U.S. Independence Day in Brooklyn, injuring eight people, more than half of whom were children, before fleeing the scene.

Foreign news agencies, citing U.S. police disclosures, reported that a gunman opened fire at a barbecue party celebrating the U.S. Independence Day on the night of Saturday, 4 Jul 2026 GMT+7, in the Coney Island area of Brooklyn, resulting in at least eight injuries, including four children.

Jessica Tisch, New York Police Department (NYPD) commissioner, stated in a Sunday morning press conference that while a family was celebrating in a backyard, an unidentified man dressed entirely in black and wearing a black beanie covering his face approached near the fence along Surf Avenue and opened fire before fleeing on foot.

The NYPD reported that police were notified around 10:35 p.m. local time on Saturday. Officers arriving at the scene found eight shooting victims: four boys aged 6, 7, 12, and 14; two women aged 21 and 25; and two men aged 33 and 37.

Police added that the 21-year-old woman and the 33-year-old man were shot in the chest, a 6-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen, while the three older boys were shot in the legs or thighs. Currently, the 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition, while the other seven injured are stable.

Sohran Mamdani, Mayor of New York City, condemned the incident, saying, “Violence like this has no place in our city. We will not tolerate it, and we will fight it with every tool at our disposal.”

“As we mourn alongside those whose loved ones have been injured, let us come together again to build a city where every celebration is safe and every holiday is filled with joy,” he added.

Authorities have not released the names of the victims or confirmed any motive for the shooting, but Tisch said there was no indication of any dispute or altercation at the barbecue before the gunfire.

Tisch also noted that police found a TEC-9 style firearm with an extended magazine and 10 spent shell casings at the scene, but no suspects have been apprehended so far.
