The Emergency Management Committee of Nanning city in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China, reported that three reservoirs in the area are at severe flood risk after continuous thunderstorms have battered the region since Saturday. The Liu Lan reservoir suffered a breach, causing floodwaters to inundate nearby villages.
Reports indicate that the Liu Lan reservoir, a medium-sized irrigation station, and the Yun Biao reservoir, located in Hengzhou city—a county-level city under Nanning's jurisdiction—have experienced serious dam breaches and overflow. Additionally, overflow at the Liu Wang reservoir's spillway in Binyang County has also been reported.
Regarding the Liu Lan reservoir, a medium-sized reservoir in the area, severe cracks appeared on the dam crest Monday morning. This prompted emergency management agencies, rescue teams, and water resource officials to rush in to control the situation and evacuate potentially affected residents.
Due to the escalating severity and danger of the flooding, the committee decided to upgrade Nanning's flood emergency response from level 3 to level 1, the highest level, effective from 11:30 a.m. local time on Monday.
Emergency management authorities, the Department of Water Resources, and fire and rescue personnel have been fully mobilized to control the floodwaters and assist affected people. Meanwhile, officials have urgently relocated residents in the risk zones of Hengzhou city and Binyang County to safer areas.
The Nanning Emergency Management Committee further revealed that most parts of Nanning have experienced heavy rainfall since Saturday, with some areas receiving particularly intense precipitation. This caused rivers and reservoirs to overflow rapidly, exceeding their capacities.
However, local meteorological authorities predict that rainfall around the Liu Wang and Liu Lan reservoirs is likely to decrease, which will help ease tensions and positively impact ongoing flood control operations. The committee confirmed that so far there have been no reports of injuries or deaths related to the event.
