Vietnamese Police Bust World Cup Online Gambling Network Worth 4.4 Billion Baht

Vietnamese police dismantled an online gambling network during the World Cup, finding that the primary accounts originated from Cambodia, with a turnover exceeding 4.4 billion baht.

On Tuesday, 7 Jul 2026 GMT+7, Vietnamese police revealed they arrested 85 suspects linked to two "especially large" online gambling networks, with a combined turnover of 133 million U.S. dollars (around 4.4 billion baht), as the government intensifies crackdowns on illegal gambling during the World Cup.

Online gambling is illegal in Vietnam; however, this highly profitable illegal trade remains widespread, prompting authorities to conduct periodic crackdowns, especially during international sporting competitions.

A statement from Ho Chi Minh City police said that a late June operation targeted two gambling networks characterized by "especially large operational structures" and "high-level hierarchical management systems with strict control."

The statement further noted that since October, these networks have accumulated illegal transactions totaling approximately 133 million U.S. dollars.

“The network leader confessed to receiving ‘master gambling accounts (main administrator accounts)’ from individuals in Cambodia... which were then subdivided into numerous agent and member accounts to distribute to online gamblers,” the statement added.

Last week, Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security disclosed that during the first 20 days of the World Cup, police dismantled 73 gambling operations nationwide and arrested 346 suspects linked to illegal gambling and football betting, with total transaction values amounting to several billion dong.
