South Korea Meteorological Agency Warns of Monsoon Rains Across Country Until Thursday with Some Areas Receiving Over 200 mm

The Korea Meteorological Administration has issued a warning of heavy monsoon rains continuing across the country until Thursday, with several areas at risk of accumulating over 200 millimeters. The government has instructed all provinces to prepare for potential flooding.

On 8 July 2026, Yonhap News Agency reported that the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) forecasts heavy monsoon rains covering South Korea throughout Wednesday, with a likelihood of continuing until Thursday. Some areas may see accumulated rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters.

The report states that rain has been falling since last night in Seoul and its metropolitan area, the inland areas of Gangwon Province, and South Chungcheong Province, before spreading nationwide. This is due to an air mass boundary moving back and forth over the Korean Peninsula. It is also expected that Seoul, its metropolitan area, the mountainous and inland areas of Gangwon, as well as central and northern North Gyeongsang Province, will receive accumulated rainfall of about 50-100 millimeters through Thursday.

Meanwhile, North Chungcheong, South Chungcheong, and North Jeolla provinces are expected to see accumulated rainfall of 80-150 millimeters, with some areas possibly receiving over 200 millimeters. Although rain is forecast to subside in many areas by Thursday night, Seoul, its metropolitan area, and the mountainous and inland areas of Gangwon may continue to experience rain into Friday morning.

Yoon Ho-jung, Minister of the Interior and Safety of South Korea, has ordered relevant agencies to swiftly prepare for the impacts of heavy rainfall. Officials have been deployed to Gyeonggi Province, South Chungcheong Province, and five other areas to closely monitor flood prevention and response measures. He emphasized that all agencies must review evacuation plans, prepare safety measures, and coordinate closely between central government and local authorities to prevent losses from potential heavy rain.
