Landslide in Chinas Gansu Province Kills 21 Rescue Operations Halted Amid Storms in Multiple Provinces Causing Over 38 Deaths

The death toll from the landslide in Gansu Province has risen to at least 21, with authorities having ceased search and rescue operations. Meanwhile, storms and heavy rain in central and southern China have caused additional fatalities.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the death toll from the landslide in Renchang village, Dangchang County, Gansu Province in northwest China has risen to at least 21 people. The landslide occurred on the morning of Tuesday, 7 July, burying 33 people in total. Authorities have now ended search and rescue efforts.

The incident happened at approximately 06:56 local time, prompting rescue teams to rush to the scene. The Chinese government has allocated 30 million yuan, roughly 4.4 million US dollars, to restore the affected areas.

At the same time, China is facing severe weather in several regions. Storms and heavy rains in central and southern provinces have resulted in about 17 more deaths and over 330 injuries.

In Hubei Province, thunderstorms have impacted more than 14,600 people, destroyed over 20 homes, and damaged more than 4,800 others. Additionally, at least one person is reported missing.

Meanwhile, Huanggang city was hit by an EF2 tornado that caused severe damage to warehouses and logistics centers. The strong winds moved several trucks as far as 30 meters.

In the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, tens of thousands of residents have been evacuated after over 40 rivers overflowed their banks and water breached reservoir dams. Among 341 reservoirs, water levels have exceeded flood control limits, and 56 water monitoring stations have recorded levels above warning thresholds.

Local officials warned that many areas remain at high risk of landslides, dam failures, and structural damage due to saturated soil and reservoirs from prolonged rainfall. Water supply systems, roads, electrical grids, and communication networks in several cities have been heavily damaged.

President Xi Jinping has ordered all agencies to fully mobilize for search and rescue operations. Meanwhile, China's Ministry of Water Resources has warned that parts of Guangxi and Guangdong provinces continue to experience heavy rain and must remain vigilant against flooding and landslides.
