A landslide buried an all-girls school in Bangladesh, caused by a monsoon storm, resulting in 8 deaths, mostly children, while authorities warned of more rain to come.
Foreign news agencies reported that a landslide struck an all-girls religious school in Cox's Bazar, a coastal city in Bangladesh, on the afternoon of Wednesday, 8 Jul 2026 GMT+7, killing 7 students and 1 teacher.
The school was buried under mud and debris, prompting an urgent search and rescue operation. It remains unclear how many people were inside the school at the time of the landslide.
Bangladesh has been hit by heavy monsoon rains since Sunday, causing multiple deadly landslides in Cox's Bazar, home to the world's largest refugee community. Over one million Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar military crackdowns live there.
Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said rescue teams have recovered 13 victims from under the mud, with 8 confirmed dead. Some were as young as 7, 8, 11, or 12 years old. Five injured children have been hospitalized for treatment.
Earlier, officials reported that other landslides since Sunday have killed at least 8 Rohingya refugees, including 5 children.
Bangladesh’s meteorological department forecasts more heavy rainfall in the coming days. Authorities have issued warnings about landslides and flooding and are evacuating families living in high-risk areas to prevent further casualties.
