The US has launched a new wave of attacks on Iran, citing retaliation for Iran firing on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, reports indicate multiple explosions in Iranian coastal cities and widespread blackouts.
On 8 Jul 2026 GMT+7, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the US has initiated another round of airstrikes against Iran just hours after President Donald Trump stated that the ceasefire agreement between the two countries may "have ended."
CENTCOM announced the attacks via a post on the X platform, stating, "Under the orders of the Commander-in-Chief, US Central Command forces have commenced additional strikes against Iran to degrade their capability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz."
"The US will hold Iran accountable for its recent unprovoked aggression against commercial navigation and civilian crews freely navigating this vital international waterway," CENTCOM said.
Meanwhile, Iranian government media reported that the southern port city of Chabahar experienced power outages following the US announcement of renewed airstrikes on Iran.
The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Iran's official news agency, reported about 10 explosions in Chabahar and in Konarak, another coastal city.
Meanwhile, IRIB, Iran's government television station, reported that Imam Ali Hospital in Chabahar was damaged by shrapnel from the attacks. Additionally, two docks and the city's maritime traffic control tower were also targeted.
Reports further indicated that missiles struck Abu Musa Island in the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the city of Sirik. Explosions were also reported in the cities of Jask and Bushehr.
IRNA later confirmed that two US missiles hit a military base south of Bushehr, though details on casualties remain unclear.
Bushehr is home to the Bushehr nuclear power plant. However, Nournews, a news outlet affiliated with Iran's Supreme National Security Council, confirmed that the nuclear plant was not damaged.
