Netizens Praise Shelter Owner for Wading Through Floodwaters to Rescue Dogs and Cats Amid Chinas Massive Floods

The online community has praised the owner of an animal shelter in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China, after videos were released showing him risking danger by wading through floodwaters to evacuate dogs and cats from the shelter amid the floods.

The major floods in China have caused widespread hardship for both people and animals. Persistent high water levels have hindered relief efforts, prompting Mo Xingjian, the shelter owner in Nanning, to brave the rapidly rising floodwaters from his home to the shelter. Concerned for the dozens of dogs and cats inside, he found the animal pens nearly submerged and had to quickly rescue the trapped animals alone.

Footage he recorded shows how difficult the rescue was, as the strong currents allowed him to carry only two dogs out at a time. Many cats were placed on the shelter’s walls and rooftops to escape the continually rising water levels.

A colleague of Mo told reporters that all animals rescued so far are safe, but more dogs and over 50 cats still await evacuation. Meanwhile, authorities and volunteers continue to intensify relief efforts.

This flooding was caused by record-breaking heavy rains due to the influence of Tropical Storm "Maysak," which has led to flash floods and widespread damage across multiple areas in Guangxi since early this week.

Chinese officials report that at least six people have died and 11 remain missing. Over 375,000 residents have been affected, with more than 130,000 evacuated. Additionally, 341 reservoirs have water levels exceeding flood control limits, and 56 monitoring stations report water levels above warning thresholds, underscoring the severity of the ongoing floods impacting southern China.
