Japan Issues Heatstroke Warnings in Four Prefectures as Typhoon Bavi Approaches Okinawa

Japan is facing extreme heat conditions that have prompted heatstroke warnings in four prefectures on Kyushu Island. Meanwhile, Typhoon "Bavi" is moving closer to Okinawa, expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain by the end of the week.

On 8 July 2026 GMT+7, NHK reported that the Japan Meteorological Agency issued heatstroke alerts across several areas of Kyushu Island in western Japan as temperatures rose. At the same time, Okinawa Prefecture is preparing for Typhoon Bavi, which is anticipated to approach later this week.

The Meteorological Agency stated that a weather front causing heavy rain over Kyushu has shifted southward, resulting in rising temperatures in western Japan. Heatstroke warnings have been issued for Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima prefectures, where many areas have recorded temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius since morning. Authorities recommend residents use air conditioning, drink plenty of water, and consume electrolytes or sodium-rich foods to prevent heatstroke.

At 09:00 on Tuesday, Typhoon Bavi was moving westward over the Pacific Ocean near the Mariana Islands, south of Japan. The typhoon has sustained maximum wind speeds near its center of 180 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 252 kilometers per hour.

The Japan Meteorological Agency predicts the typhoon will approach Okinawa Prefecture between Friday and Saturday, maintaining its intensity. This will cause strong waves and winds around Okinawa and the Amami Islands starting Thursday, with heavy rainfall likely in Okinawa that may prompt official warnings from Friday. If the typhoon follows the forecasted path, southern Kyushu may also experience strong waves and winds. Officials advise residents to closely monitor weather updates and official alerts.
