Explosions Heard Again in Iranian Coastal City Amid Unclear US-Israel Involvement

Iranian media reported explosions again in a coastal city on Thursday evening. Officials confirmed it was an attack, but it remains unclear whether Israel or the US carried out the strikes against Iran over the past two days.

Mehr News Agency, a semi-official Iranian outlet, reported three explosions in Konarak city on the evening of Thursday, 9 Jul 2026 local time. Meanwhile, the state news agency IRNA reported explosions in Bushehr city, home to a nuclear power plant.

Ehsan Jahaniyan, Deputy Governor for Political and Security Affairs of Bushehr province, told IRNA that a military base outside the city was attacked by what he described as "missiles from the US-Israeli enemy," after which Iran's air defense system fired back.

However, Jahaniyan did not provide further details about the extent of damage or any casualties.

A US official told CNN that the US military is not conducting any attacks at this time. Israeli officials also stated they are unaware of any Israeli involvement in the recent strikes on Iran.

There is currently no clear confirmation on the cause of the explosions or the scope of damage in Konarak and Bushehr cities.

Konarak is a strategic port city on the Makran coast in Sistan and Baluchestan province, located on the western side of the Gulf of Oman. Bushehr city lies in Bushehr province along Iran's southern coast.

Previously, the US conducted sustained attacks on Iran from 8 to 9 July 2026, targeting 90 sites across five provinces including Bushehr and Bandar Abbas, a port city near the Strait of Hormuz. These strikes resulted in 14 deaths and 78 injuries, focusing also on a railway bridge used for trade between Iran, Russia, and China.

The US military stated on Wednesday that the latest attacks aimed to keep the Strait of Hormuz open after accusing Iranian forces of attacking three oil tankers in the area.
