On 9 July 2026, international news agencies reported that the death toll from heavy rain and storms across various regions of China has risen to more than 70. Tropical Storm Maysak made landfall in the southern part of the country, triggering floods, landslides, and tornadoes across multiple provinces.
Chinese local media reported that in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, 39 people have died and 9 are missing following the collapse of a reservoir, which caused widespread flooding. Additionally, the flood released hundreds of snakes from a breeding farm, and one person reportedly died after a snake bite.
In Hubei Province, located in central China, several tornadoes struck on Monday, resulting in 11 deaths, 1 missing person, and over 300 injuries. Meanwhile, a landslide in Gansu Province claimed another 21 lives.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has instructed all agencies to fully mobilize rescue operations, evacuate residents, and provide urgent assistance to those affected. At the same time, China's meteorological authorities warned that Typhoon Bavi may approach the eastern coastline as early as this weekend, urging the public to closely monitor heavy rain and strong winds.
