Jayden Adams, a South African national footballer who recently represented his country in the 2026 World Cup, has died at the young age of 25. His body was found at a house in Cape Town, South Africa.
The BBC reported on Saturday, 11 July 2026 GMT+7, that Jayden Adams, a midfielder for both the South African national team and the Mamelodi Sundowns club, died at only 25 years old, just weeks after playing for his homeland in the 2026 World Cup.
Adams played in all three group stage matches for South Africa, who successfully advanced to the knockout round before being defeated by co-host Canada in the round of 32.
Gaetan McKenzie, South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, issued a statement saying, "I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn of Jayden Adams's passing."
"South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and the nation joins his family, teammates, and millions of fans who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect to a senior Bafana Bafana national team player in mourning."
South African police revealed they have begun an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in the Schotschekloof neighborhood in central Cape Town on the morning of Saturday, 11 July 2026 GMT+7.
McKenzie added, "The cause of Jayden’s death has not been officially confirmed, and I urge the media and public to exercise restraint and sympathy, refraining from speculation to allow his family and Mamelodi Sundowns the necessary privacy during this difficult time."
"Any official information will be communicated by the relevant parties at the appropriate time."
Jayden Adams made his national team debut in 2022 and started in South Africa's 1-1 World Cup group stage draw against the Czech Republic, despite learning just hours before kickoff that his grandmother had passed away.
The South African Football Players Union expressed that they are "heartbroken by the untimely passing" of Adams. "Jayden had recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction."
"His loss is an immeasurable blow to his family, teammates, club, the football community, and the country," the union continued. "South African football has lost a talented, dedicated player and a young man with much more to give to the sport."
Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before transferring to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he won league titles and the African Champions League.
He was also part of the South African squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations and was selected by Hugo Broos for the recent World Cup campaign, where the team made history by advancing to the knockout stage for the first time.
