Myanmar's Foreign Minister assured fellow ASEAN ministers at the meeting that Aung San Suu Kyi, the detained former leader, is in good health and that they will take good care of her.
On Sunday, 12 Jul 2026 GMT+7, the ASEAN special envoy to Myanmar revealed that Myanmar's Foreign Minister informed ASEAN foreign ministers that the detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health and will be well cared for.
Maria Teresa Lazaro, Philippines' Foreign Minister, has sought to meet with 81-year-old former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained since the military seized power from her elected government in 2021.
“As far as I recall from Myanmar’s Foreign Minister’s statement about Aung San Suu Kyi, she is in good health, and he said she is like family, like a sister, so we will take care of her ourselves,” Lazaro said at a press conference.
Currently, Aung San Suu Kyi is serving a 27-year prison sentence on multiple charges which her allies say were fabricated to exclude her from politics. These include incitement, corruption, election fraud, and violating state secrets laws, all of which she denies.
Her exact whereabouts remain unknown, but Lazaro disclosed earlier that Suu Kyi was moved to a “designated place” without providing further details.
Thailand’s Foreign Minister, Sihasak Puangketkaew, said Myanmar’s Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe faced many questions during the informal meeting on Sunday in Bangkok regarding the status of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
“We also expressed that if ASEAN’s special envoy is given the opportunity to meet Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, it would be better, so we could verify the claims made by Myanmar’s Foreign Minister,” said Sihasak, respectfully addressing her by her Burmese honorific.
