Trump announced plans to reinstate blockade measures against Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz and intends to levy a 20% transit fee on commercial vessels based on the value of their cargo.
On Monday, 13 Jul 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that he would reinstate the blockade of Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz and impose transit fees on other commercial vessels passing through this key shipping route.
"The Strait of Hormuz remains open and will continue to be open, regardless of Iran's stance. We are bringing back the 'Iran blockade measures' because they are designed solely to restrict Iranian ships or clients from entering or exiting. All other countries will have fair and open access to use this strait," he said.
Additionally, Trump emphasized that the U.S. will act as the 'guardian' of the Strait of Hormuz and will charge commercial cargo ships a fee of 20% of the cargo value as compensation for the U.S.'s role in maintaining security in the strait.
"From now on, the United States will be known as the 'Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz.' In this capacity, and to be fair, we will be compensated at a rate of 20% of all cargo shipped, covering any and all expenses required to carry out our duties to provide safety and security in this highly volatile region of the world," Trump stated.
Control of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments, has become a major obstacle in U.S.-Iran negotiations. Iran's effective blockade has driven energy prices up and raised global inflation concerns.
The U.S. and Iran engaged in heavy reciprocal attacks last week after renewed clashes following Iran's assaults on several commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. responded with strikes aimed at reducing Iran's capability to attack ships.
Tehran declared the Strait of Hormuz closed again on Saturday (11 Jul), citing unauthorized navigation. On Sunday, Iranian authorities said the suspension of transit remains in effect and that permits will be issued again once 'stability and calm' return.
This latest escalation represents a rapid intensification in both the frequency and geographic scope of attacks, putting the interim agreement between the U.S. and Iran, signed last month, in jeopardy. Both sides are currently within a 60-day period to negotiate a final peace deal to end the conflict.
