Bangladesh Hit Hard by Heavy Rain and Flash Floods, Death Toll Reaches 51

Bangladesh has faced several days of heavy rain, causing floods and landslides in multiple locations, resulting in at least 51 deaths. Weather forecasts warn that further flooding may occur.

Foreign news agencies reported on 13 Jul 2026 GMT+7 that Bangladesh has endured heavy rainfall over recent days, triggering flash floods and landslides in many parts of the country, including the capital city Dhaka, claiming at least 51 lives while thousands of residents have lost their homes.

So far, more than half of the fatalities—28 deaths—have been recorded in Cox's Bazar, home to the world's largest Rohingya refugee camp. Last week, a landslide buried an all-girls school in the area, killing several students and one teacher.

Bangladesh is a low-lying country with many rivers and regularly experiences heavy rains and flooding during the annual monsoon season. However, experts warn that climate change is causing heavier and more frequent downpours than before.

The latest wave of heavy rain began last week, with conditions worsening in recent days. The government has issued flood and landslide warnings, evacuated families from high-risk zones, and postponed student examinations.

Authorities stated that by Sunday, more than one million people had been affected by the floods, and currently thousands are living in government shelters.

According to BBC reports, traffic in Dhaka slowed due to waterlogged streets, with water levels reaching knee height in some areas. On Monday, some local media questioned the previous government's efforts to improve the city’s drainage system.

Sarder Uday Raihan from the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre told AFP that conditions in the southeast are expected to improve soon, but the monsoon will continue to affect northeastern and northern Bangladesh, raising the likelihood of additional flooding.
