UAE Reports Iranian Missile Attack on Oil Tankers in Strait of Hormuz, One Crew Member Dead

The UAE accuses Iran of firing missiles at two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in the death of one Indian crew member and injuries to eight others, while reserving the right to retaliate.

On 15 July 2026, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Defense revealed that two UAE oil tankers were struck by Iranian cruise missiles while navigating the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz, within Omani waters. The attack caused the death of one Indian crew member and injuries to eight others, including both Indian and Ukrainian nationals.

Reports identified the attacked vessels as Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, with the fatality occurring on Mombasa. The explosions caused fires on both ships, which authorities were able to control. The UAE condemned the attack as brazen, emphasized its full right to retaliate, and stated that its forces are prepared to confront all threats to protect national security.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom's Maritime Trade Operations Centre reported that another tanker was struck by an unidentified object on the starboard engine room side while sailing approximately 40 nautical miles northeast of the Omani city of Qalhat. Fortunately, all crew members were unharmed. It remains unclear whether this incident is related to the UAE-reported attack.

Iran has yet to comment on the attack. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains tense following the outbreak of conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran since late February. Recently, President Donald Trump announced the reinstatement of maritime blockade measures against Iranian shipping, affirming that further military actions against Iran would be taken if tensions escalate.
