Donald Trump opened the White House to welcome champion race drivers ahead of the first-ever "Freedom 250 Grand Prix" in Washington D.C., celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding.
President Donald Trump hosted world-class race drivers at the White House on Monday to promote the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, scheduled for 22-23 August. This IndyCar race will take place through the heart of Washington D.C., marking the first time such a race has been held in the U.S. capital's history.
At the event, Trump said this race would be one of a kind and believed it would make new history in the motorsports world.
Trump also praised the participating drivers, including Alex Palou, Felix Rosenqvist, and David Malukas, adding that he would never dare to drive at such speeds.
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix will run along Pennsylvania Avenue and the National Mall, key landmarks in Washington D.C. The race cars will reach speeds over 190 miles per hour, or about 305 kilometers per hour. Trump joked that anyone driving that fast on these streets on a normal day would be jailed for life.
This race is part of the 250th anniversary celebration of U.S. independence, following Trump’s executive order in January officially authorizing the event.
Trump confirmed that the public can attend the race free of charge, although he believes the event could sell tickets and generate significant revenue.
Roger Penske, owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and chairman of Penske Corporation, also attended. The event concluded with an IndyCar demonstration outside the White House, featuring David Malukas driving and a pit stop tire change demonstration by Penske’s crew, adding color to the gathering.
