The U.S. military has launched a new series of airstrikes against Iran, marking the sixth consecutive night of attacks, while Iranian sources reported multiple explosions in a southern port city.
On Thursday, 16 Jul 2026 GMT+7, the U.S. Central Command (Centcom), headquartered in Tampa, Florida, and responsible for overseeing U.S. military forces involved in the Iran conflict, posted on X that the U.S. military had initiated a new wave of airstrikes on Iran.
Centcom stated that the airstrikes, which began around 9:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, aimed "to further degrade Iran's military capabilities." This marks the sixth consecutive night the U.S. has attacked Iran.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) reported on Thursday evening local time that three explosions were heard in the western area of Bandar Abbas, an important port city on the country's southern coast.
However, IRIB said the exact cause of the explosions remains unclear, and there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities.
The U.S. actions follow President Donald Trump's announcement on Tuesday to reinstate a maritime blockade after accusing Iran of multiple attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which triggered the renewed U.S. strikes and a series of retaliatory exchanges over recent days.
