India Arrests Three Passengers Smuggling Cannabis Directly from Thailand, Seizing 6.37 kg

Customs officers at New Delhi airport in India arrested three Indian passengers arriving from Bangkok and Phuket on charges of smuggling cannabis concealed on the airplane, with a total weight of 6.37 kilograms.

Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi arrested three Indian passengers after seizing 6.37 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis—cannabis cultivated in water instead of soil with high potency—on Monday (13 Jul). The seized drugs were hidden in the airplane’s lavatories, under passenger seats, and inside luggage.

The first Indian passenger arrived from Bangkok on Monday (13 Jul) and was stopped after passing through the channel for passengers without illegal items. Officials identified the passenger via pre-screening passenger data analysis. Although no suspicious items were found in his luggage, a detailed search inside the airplane uncovered four sealed packages suspected to be hydroponic cannabis weighing 3.47 kilograms hidden in the two rear lavatories. When questioned, the passenger admitted to hiding the cannabis packages there.

Another passenger arriving from Phuket the same day was stopped after pre-screening passenger data (APIS) analysis. No illegal items were found in his luggage, but a search on the plane revealed six sealed packages suspected to be hydroponic cannabis weighing 1.5 kilograms hidden under the seat in row 12. The passenger later confessed to concealing the cannabis packages on the airplane.

In the third case, customs officials detected suspicious behavior from an Indian passenger arriving from Bangkok through the pre-screening system (APIS). They awaited his attempt to bypass customs by using the green channel. Officials immediately intercepted him, and an X-ray scan of his luggage revealed irregularities. This led to the seizure of two vacuum-sealed packages of hydroponic cannabis weighing about 1.4 kilograms. All three passengers will face prosecution under India’s narcotics laws.
