Poll Shows Americans Doubt Donald Trump Will Make Better Iran Deal Than Obama

A recent survey found only 23% of Americans believe Donald Trump can secure a nuclear deal with Iran better than the one under Barack Obama, while 37% expect it to be worse.

On 17 July 2026 GMT+7, CNN reported on a joint survey by The Washington Post and Ipsos showing that most Americans remain skeptical that President Donald Trump can negotiate a better nuclear deal with Iran than the 2015 agreement made during President Barack Obama's administration.

The survey revealed that only 23% of respondents believe Trump can achieve a better deal, whereas 37% think his deal would be worse. Meanwhile, 12% expect the deal's quality to be about the same, and the rest had no opinion.

This survey result is bad news for Trump, as since tensions with Iran began, he has repeatedly criticized Obama's nuclear deal, calling it a disaster and promising to negotiate a superior agreement.

However, even among Republican supporters, only 54% believe Trump will do better than Obama. Most of this support comes from MAGA Republicans, with 70% backing Trump. Among non-MAGA Republicans, opinions are split: 27% believe Trump will make a better deal, while 23% think Obama's agreement remains superior.
