7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Mexico-Guatemala Coast Tsunami Warning Issued Within 300 Km Radius

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mexico near the Guatemala border, with tremors felt in both countries. A tsunami warning was issued within a 300-kilometer radius, while officials are rushing to assess the damage.

On 17 July 2026 GMT+7, foreign news agencies reported a 7.3 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Chiapas state in southern Mexico near the Guatemala border. The quake caused strong tremors in both countries, leading to a tsunami warning along the Pacific coastline.

Reports indicated the earthquake's epicenter was offshore near Puerto Madero in Chiapas state at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers. This shallow depth caused unusually strong surface shaking. Authorities warned of possible tsunami waves within a 300-kilometer radius from the epicenter.

Following the quake, residents in several areas of Mexico and Guatemala evacuated buildings for safety. Both countries' governments declared emergency measures and dispatched officials to inspect potential damage to homes, buildings, and infrastructure, as well as to assess any casualties or injuries from the event.

Preliminarily, the U.S. Geological Survey stated the epicenter was offshore Chiapas state and that no serious damage or deaths have been reported immediately. Officials are closely monitoring the situation due to the risk of aftershocks and possible tsunami waves.
