The U.S. military has acknowledged that two personnel were killed and one went missing while on duty after renewed weapons exchanges between American and Iranian forces over the past week.
On Saturday, 18 July 2026 GMT+7, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that two U.S. military personnel were killed and one went missing during operations amid the recent round of retaliatory strikes against Iran. This marks the latest U.S. military loss in the conflict with Iran since March.
CENTCOM posted on social media, "On 17 July, two U.S. service members in Jordan died while on duty as U.S. Central Command and allied forces jointly defended against Iranian drone and cruise missile attacks. Additionally, one service member remains missing during operations."
CENTCOM added that four other U.S. service members were hospitalized in Jordan but have since been cleared for release. Other personnel sustained minor injuries but have returned to duty as normal.
CENTCOM stated it will withhold the names of the deceased until 24 hours after next of kin have been properly notified.
Since the outbreak of the war with Iran on 28 February, the U.S. has lost 13 soldiers, mostly due to accidents and attacks during regional operations.
In the latest clashes, the U.S. military has conducted seven consecutive nights of strikes after accusing Iran of attacking a ship in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran retaliated with waves of drones and missiles targeting various locations, expanding attacks across countries hosting U.S. bases in the Middle East.
On Saturday (18 July), Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy reported that Iran's attacks caused damage to a power plant and a seawater desalination facility, critical infrastructure supplying potable water in the region.
