Indian officials and local media reported that flash floods and landslides caused by heavy monsoon rains have led to at least 19 deaths in the northeastern states on Sunday, 19 Jul 2026 GMT+7, while rescue operations are underway in the affected areas.
Reports indicate 8 deaths and 15 injuries in Nagaland state in the northeast, bordering Myanmar, while 11 fatalities occurred in the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The office of Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of the Jammu and Kashmir union territory, stated that the floods have caused widespread damage to both government and private properties, including passenger transport stations, disrupting the lives of many residents.
Indian television station NDTV reported at least 19 deaths and several missing persons in Jammu. The military confirmed that state soldiers and emergency rescue teams have assisted 11 people, including five children, in the Rajouri district of Jammu.
On Sunday, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a warning of the likelihood of very heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir over the next two days.
Authorities also announced a temporary suspension of the annual Hindu 'Amarnath' pilgrimage in the Kashmir region to ensure the "safety and welfare" of all pilgrims.
Officials emphasized that the pilgrimage will resume only after weather conditions improve and routes are declared safe.
Last year, more than 400,000 Hindus participated in the month-long Amarnath pilgrimage.
Authorities have also suspended Hindu pilgrimages to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu, a site that attracts millions of visitors annually.
