The U.S. military announced that another American soldier died during the controlled detonation of an Iranian suicide drone that was shot down in Iraq, just one day after revealing two soldiers had died in Jordan.
On Sunday, 19 July 2026, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced via social media that one American soldier was killed while conducting a controlled explosion to destroy an Iranian drone downed in Iraq, and another American service member was wounded in the same incident.
"One U.S. soldier died in northern Iraq on 18 July during a controlled detonation to destroy an unexploded device from an Iranian suicide drone that had been shot down. Additionally, a second soldier was injured and is currently receiving treatment for minor wounds," CENTCOM stated.
This latest loss occurred just one day after the U.S. Department of Defense (the Pentagon) announced that two soldiers died in Jordan due to an Iranian attack on Friday, 17 July, and that one soldier was missing in action.
On Sunday, CENTCOM also reported finding an unidentified body in Jordan, but it remains unclear whether it belongs to the missing soldier.
Nevertheless, this incident has raised the total number of U.S. military deaths in the nearly five-month conflict to 17. Meanwhile, Iran has reported at least 50 deaths and over 500 injuries from U.S. attacks during the past three weeks.
Meanwhile, the U.S. and Iran have been exchanging attacks continuously for the eighth consecutive night, targeting each other's critical infrastructure.
Reports indicate that U.S. strikes targeted nuclear power plants under construction in Darkhoveyn city in the southwest and Qeshm Island. The United Nations confirmed that these plants are still in early construction stages with no nuclear material on site.
The U.S. stated that the attacks aimed to reduce Iran's ability to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and to punish the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for attacking American forces in Jordan.
Kuwait disclosed that Iranian forces attacked its power plants and water treatment facilities for the second time in two days, causing fires. Iran also claimed to have struck U.S. airbases and warehouses in Kuwait.
The Jordanian military reported intercepting three Iranian missiles, with a fourth landing in a remote area. Jordan’s government summoned the Iranian deputy ambassador to strongly protest, emphasizing that national security is a red line that must not be crossed.
Meanwhile, the Iranian navy claimed that two vessels ignored warnings while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in an "accident," and warned that any ship influenced by the U.S. would face similar incidents.
