Iran Accuses U.S. of Attacking Nuclear Plant, Vows Appropriate Retaliation

Iran accused the United States of attacking their nuclear power plant currently under construction and warned that Iran would respond appropriately.

On Sunday, 19 Jul 2026 GMT+7, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Qasem Garibabadi warned that Iran would mount an “appropriate” retaliation after accusing the U.S. of attacking the Darkhovin nuclear power plant in southern Iran.

In an interview with IRIB, Iran’s state television, Garibabadi said, “The U.S. attack on the Darkhovin nuclear plant under construction is a dangerous assault on Iran’s peaceful infrastructure, and the U.S. must bear full responsibility for the resulting increased insecurity and instability.”

“While Iran condemns this aggressive act strongly, we will take appropriate measures to protect our national interests and security,” Garibabadi added.

Earlier on Sunday, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran revealed that the U.S. attacked the Darkhovin construction site near the Iraqi border, though U.S. officials have yet to officially confirm this.

Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a U.N. monitoring body, stated Sunday morning that it is currently investigating reports of an overnight attack on Iran’s nuclear plant construction site.

The IAEA noted that the Darkhovin plant is still in a “very early” stage of construction and that the reported attack is unlikely to have caused any radiation risks. However, the agency has called for “military restraint” near all nuclear-related sites.
