A tragic event occurred during World Cup celebrations in Spain when a fountain collapsed, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old boy and injuries to two other children.
Foreign news agencies reported that part of the "Árbol Gordo" fountain in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca province, northwest Spain, collapsed as crowds gathered to celebrate Spain’s recent World Cup victory, which concluded this past Sunday.
The structure partially collapsed around 00:30 on Monday, 20 Jul 2026 GMT+7 local time, after several people climbed on it to celebrate. The collapse caused the death of a 13-year-old boy and injured two other youths, one of whom was hospitalized with a suspected broken leg.
"What should have been a celebration of Spain’s World Cup win has turned into a tragedy," the Ciudad Rodrigo city hall posted on social media.
Emergency services in Castilla y León reported notifying the local police, Salamanca’s Civil Guard, firefighters, and local emergency medical teams, who dispatched mobile intensive care units and basic life support ambulances to the scene.
Later, emergency services requested the Civil Guard to investigate the boy’s death at the local medical center and to send officials to provide psychological support and comfort to the grieving family.
This loss followed Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday, marking the country’s second World Cup title since their previous win in 2010 (B.E. 2553).
